LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program has been creating Christmas magic for children since 1979, and this year nearly 1,000 local children are hoping the community will help make their holidays brighter.
Angel Trees are now stationed at South Plains Mall and the Salvation Army of Lubbock, with each tag representing a child whose family could use some extra support during the holiday season.
Major Jamie Clay says families often struggle with asking for help, making the program even more meaningful for those who participate.
“It’s very hard for most families to ask for the assistance, and when they actually have come and applied, many of them are very humbled because it’s a struggle,” Clay said. “Nobody ever wants to say that they can’t provide the basic needs for their children. So this is a way for us to be able to help our neighbor and our friends. It takes a village, right?”
The children’s requests range from practical items like warm coats to toys they’ve been hoping for but their parents can’t currently afford. Clay says witnessing the community’s generosity never gets old.
“Many times on distribution day they break down and cry. They are so moved by the act of love that people have adopted their child,” she said.
The program extends beyond children, with silver bells representing seniors who also need additional support during the holidays.
Community members who select a tag are asked to return it along with the requested gifts.
The Salvation Army requests that gifts remain unwrapped, allowing parents and guardians to experience the joy of wrapping presents and creating Christmas morning memories with their children.
For families participating in the program, the Angel Tree represents more than just gifts — it’s proof that their community cares and that no child has to go without during the holidays.
The program demonstrates how a simple act of picking up a tag can create lasting holiday memories for families throughout Lubbock.
