EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The student-created Career 101 club over at Loretto Academy, which is helping middle school students explore future career paths, invited El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson to the school to speak about his role and responsibilities on Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Johnson stopped by a second-grade class at Loretto Elementary School and moved to an eighth-grade class at Loretto Academy to discuss leadership and public safety.
Ariana Bowens, an eighth-grader and president of the Career 101 club, said she wants her classmates to experience different routes that don’t just give high-paying jobs, but also give them satisfaction. Her goal is to have as many guests as possible speak about their careers and inspire every Loretto student.
“We don’t just have people as you think in civic jobs. We have people, like nail technicians. We have people from federal jobs; we have been trying to get them since the government shutdown. And we also get people from all backgrounds of life, and normally, they come and talk. When we don’t have guests, our sponsor Miss Norma Oaxaca comes and talks about our needed GPA and everything that we need to go to college in high school, because since high school is our next stop for us, it helps us prepare to go to high school and for those who are in sixth and seventh grade to know what’s ahead for them,” Bowens said.
Ana Contreras, the vice president of the club, added that they are always asking their classmates which career paths they would like to learn about, and they also encourage anyone who’s passionate about their job and wants to inspire girls to talk to them.
