About 60 members of the Oregon National Guard are being deployed to Texas to help provide security at the border, the Oregon Military Department said Tuesday.
The department held a mobilization ceremony in Salem for the soldiers from A Company, Forward Support Company, 1249th Engineer Battalion.
The soldiers will work alongside military police with the 104th Military Police Battalion, 10th Mountain Division.
Oregon National Guard members will assist in vehicle recovery, maintenance, refueling and parts distribution.
They will receive training for the mission at Fort Bliss, Texas.
“We were notified of the deployment within the last four months,” said Capt. Timothy Gildea, who is also a Medford police officer. “I have an all-star staff who worked incredibly hard to get everybody spun up and ready to go. I’m incredibly proud of everybody.”
