Florida issues horse health alert after Texas viral outbreak

  • November 21, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB) — The Florida Department of Agriculture has issued a health alert for horses due to a dangerous viral outbreak in Texas.

The equine herpes virus (EHV-1) was detected at two events in Texas early this month.

Officials say multiple horses attending the World Pro Rodeo Association (WPRA) event held from November 5-9, in Waco, Texas, and the Barrel Futurities of America event held November 17-18, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, have shown signs of illness.

Horse owners in Florida are warned to lock down any horses that may have been stabled at either event for 21 days.

No cases of EHV-1 have been identified in Florida, but a rodeo scheduled in the Panhandle this week has been canceled as a precaution.

State leaders ask those in the equine community to report any suspected EHV-1 neurological cases. For reporting, call (850) 410-0900, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and 1-800-342-5869 after hours and weekends, or email RAD@FDACS.gov.
