When Christmas rolls around, it’s a great time to recognize the people and places you love — and I absolutely love Lubbock.

Our love might confuse some folks. Sure, we see the same bumps, warts, dust storms, and questionable driving habits as everyone else. But some of us choose to focus on the bright spots. Maybe that means we’re living in a cozy combo of denial and the Hub City, but honestly, that sounds like a pretty Lubbock thing to do.

I’ll never pretend Lubbock is perfect. There’s a streak of ugliness and intolerance that flares up sometimes, and it’s frustrating. But I’ll give this town credit where credit is due — most people here, when you meet them face-to-face, genuinely try to play nice. They’re polite. They’re cheerful. They’ll hold the door for you even when you’re way too far away and now you have to jog awkwardly (a very Lubbock tradition).

It’s Hard To Stay Mad When You Live In Lubbock

Let’s also keep it real: it’s hard to stay cranky in a city held together by tacos, queso, and more chicken restaurants than scientifically necessary. A full stomach is basically a peace treaty waiting to happen.

I’ve spent a good chunk of my life trying to nudge this city forward just a little — making room for the weirdos, the creatives, the Halloween lovers, the misfits, the people who don’t quite fit the classic West Texas mold. And I think we’ve succeeded more than folks realize. Lubbock is cooler than it used to be, and maybe just a touch more open-minded.

But enough seriousness. Because this article is meant to be fun — a Christmas wish list written on behalf of the entire Hub City. We’re not asking Santa for swimming pools, zoos, or fancy attractions. No, no. These are the things Lubbock actually needs, the things that would make our quirky little home even quirkier.
