Allman Betts go together as naturally as salt and pepper, and they’re about to hit Lubbock.
As I sit here typing this, I can see an Allman Brothers poster in my peripheral vision. When I was growing up, The Allman Brothers were spoken of in the same breath as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, and the other founding fathers of hard rock. They represented the blues-and-country cousin wing in that mansion built from rock and roll.
These days, the sons of those pioneers and legends keep the family tradition alive — but not in the way you might assume. They’re not an Allman Brothers cover band. They’re a band that operates in the spirit of the Brothers. They stand on their own legs while standing on very big shoulders.
Speaking of those shoulders: Devon Allman is the son of Gregg Allman, and Duane Betts is the son of Dickey Betts. If those names don’t immediately click for you, feel free to flip to page one of the Southern Rock Handbook. Or I can save you the trip — Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts, along with Duane Allman, were the de facto leaders of The Allman Brothers Band.
The “Family Revival” is built on the base of the Allman Betts band, but is expanded with a number of guest artists and a larger chunk of Allman Brothers tunes. The Lubbock show will feature Amanda Shires and guitar wizard Eric Johnson among the special guests.
