Smith was ejected from Saturday’s game against Arkansas after committing a targeting penalty. Because the foul took place in the second half of the game, he’ll face a further 30-minute punishment for next week’s rivalry game.
Smith’s facemask made contact with the helmet of an Arkansas receiver on a third-quarter play. Officials ruled the play was targeting on the field, and the decision was upheld following a video review.
The suspension further strains Texas’ linebacker depth. Smith started Saturday in place of the injured Anthony Hill Jr. It’s unclear if Hill, arguably the Longhorns’ best player on defense, will be available for Friday’s contest against the Aggies.
Smith, a sophomore, has 47 tackles on the season to go with 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He flipped his commitment from the Aggies to the Longhorns on National Signing Day back in 2023.
