LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Lubbock native has received statewide recognition after she was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Texas.
Elisha Aguirre was given her crown and sash during a ceremony on Saturday. The Ms. Wheelchair America pageant started in 1972 as a way to promote the achievements and needs of mobility-impaired people.

The Ms. Wheelchair America and Ms. Wheelchair Texas pageants select the most accomplished and articulate spokeswoman to represent the millions of Americans who face disabilities. Aguirre said she wants to raise awareness for home healthcare and medical insurance.
She said she was born with her disability but has never let it define who she is and the impact she wants to make.
“The fact that I get my crown and my sash today; I’m super excited and happy that I have the community behind me,” Aguirre said. “Lubbock is a very awesome community I was born and raised here and they’re just behind their people…to have Lubbock behind me and get out here and represent not only texas but Lubbock, Texas so I’m excited and ready to move forward.”
Aguirre will travel throughout next year raising awareness for her cause and will then compete in Ms. Wheelchair America next fall.
