TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Jeff Williford with the Texas Department of Transportation sat down with KETK+ this week to talk about the importance of keeping crash responders safe on the road.

Foods to focus on after the government shutdown

This week is Crash Responder Safety Week and for Williford, this week is necessary because the Tyler TxDOT district has seen too many road work fatalities recently.

“We had three fatalities in our Tyler District. So that’s eight counties here in East Texas. We had three fatalities in work zone areas last year. Again, we always say that one death is too many. It’s all about bringing awareness to being safe and slowing down if you see us out there.”

As drivers hit the roads this holiday season, it’s important to know that Texas law requires drivers move over a lane or slow down to 20 miles per hour if there’s a crash responder or a road worker on the road.

Drivers could face fines of up to $1,200 and if a first responder is hurt, drivers can face jail time so officials urge East Texans to stay alert while behind the wheel. To hear more from Williford, check out the video below:
