Arch Manning pivoted his shoulders, and the ball, away from running back Quintrevion Wisner, waited for a beat, then uncorked one of the easiest passes he’s thrown all year.Â
Nobody was in the same zip code as Texas football wide receiver Parker Livingstone, who easily reeled in the pass from his roommate and scampered into the end zone for a 54-yard touchdown.Â

The second of Manningâs four touchdown passes in the 52-37 victory over Arkansas Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium looked a lot like the throws Manning made last season while deputizing for Quinn Ewers. During that spell, he unleashed a handful of beautiful deep balls that helped build the hype that evolved into a mania as Manning prepared to take the reins of Texasâ offense in 2025.Â

Manning has been playing outstanding football for the last month, achieving that excellence with varying methods. Against Arkansas, the Longhorns used the play-action game to attack the Razorbacks vertically.Â

âI thought tonight he exhibited some real poise,â Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said postgame. âMoving in the pocket, keeping his eyes up and making some plays down the field. I was hard on him tonight, like I’m hard on him every game. I think there was plays that I would love for him to make even more than he had, but that’s the beauty of growing as a player. That’s the beauty of being coachable as a player.”Â

REPORT CARD: Arch Manning comes up aces, but the defense again struggles
Texas football, Arch Manning find play-action successÂ
Arkansas’ safeties spent Saturday afternoon in a torture chamber thanks in part to Texas’ increased emphasis on the play-action game.Â
Article continues below this ad
Manning used a play fake on 41.9% of his dropbacks Saturday, well above his 36.2% play-action rate coming into the game. It bucked a short-term trend, too. Manning’s improvement over the last three weeks coincided with a sharp reduction in play-action volume.Â
Texas wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. said that the Longhorns expected to see Cover 3 and Cover 6 looks from the Arkansas defense. Cover 6, in particular, asks safeties to play key roles defending the run game, which can leave them vulnerable to the play-action pass.Â
Manning averaged 16.2 yards on his 13 play-action attempts â by far the most efficient effort he’s produced in the play-action game this season.Â

Even without a traditional play-action fake, Texas often succeeded in distracting the Arkansas safeties with a little bit of eye candy. Texas’ first touchdown of the game, a 46-yard deep ball to Moore, was preceded by a fake screen pass and a pump fake that made the Razorbacks’ defensive backfield freeze.Â
“He’s just really smart,” Manning said of Moore, who caught three touchdown passes. “You get the ball in his hands, he makes plays. Really proud of him. It hasn’t always gone the way he would like this season, but he played really well today.”Â
Texas Longhorns don’t change much without Anthony Hill Jr.Â
Texas hasn’t defended the run as poorly as it did on Saturday since Sarkisian’s first year on the job in 2021, when the Longhorn defense was an all-around disaster.Â

Against Arkansas, Texas approached the same level of defensive helplessness, saved only by a pair of turnovers that helped decide the game in the second half.Â
Arkansas averaged 6.1 yards per rush. The last time the Longhorns gave up more than five yards per rush in a game was also the last time they played a game without star linebacker Anthony Hill Jr.: the 2022 Alamo Bowl against Washington.Â
MORE:Â Where Longhorns sit in AP Top 25, Coaches Poll after Arkansas win
With Hill sidelined Saturday due to an injury, Texas decided against making structural changes to its defense. Liona Lefau said the coaching staff asked him, generally speaking, to do the same things he always does.Â

“Our linebackers are pretty much the same,” safety Jelani McDonald said after the game. “(They’ve got) the same aggression, same physicality. It’s just a matter of experience.”Â
To some, it looked like that inexperience showed itself on the first play from scrimmage. Trey Moore, a converted edge rusher, was blown up by a fullback on an interior run, and Razorback guard Kobe Branham made a great play to block Lefau after handling his original assignment. The result was a 41-yard gain for Mike Washington.Â
Sarkisian, though, disagreed.Â
“The first run, I feel like we fit it fine,” he said. “We missed a tackle.”Â

Texas football offensive line continues improvement in front of Arch ManningÂ
The pressure rate faced by Manning Saturday was the lowest of the season as the Longhorns continue to take steps forward with their new offensive line combination.Â
Arkansas pressured Manning on just 19.4% of his dropbacks. Notably, Quincy Rhodes Jr., who is likely to be selected in the first round of this spring’s draft, was managed well. He registered just a pair of hurries.Â

When Manning was asked to cope with pressure, he managed it well. On six pressure reps, he completed three passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular showcase of his improvisation skills, eluding the rush before hitting Moore for an 8-yard TD.Â
MORE: Why Texas football chose rest for Texas A&M over Arkansas style points in race for CFP bid
Saturday’s game provided further evidence to an emerging trend: Give Manning time, and he’ll produce.Â
When facing pressure rates below 35% this season, Manning is averaging a 65% completion percentage, 297 yards and 2.8 passing touchdowns per game.Â

Kade Phillips shows well in first Texas football startÂ
The Longhorns turned to true freshman corner Kade Phillips on Saturday in an effort to shore up a struggling pass defense.Â
The rookie rewarded Sarkisian and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski for their faith.Â
Article continues below this ad
Phillips was targeted five times by the Razorbacks, allowing just two receptions for nine yards.Â
That showing provided the foundation for the Longhorns to build out an all-around stellar showing from their cornerbacks. When targeting the Longhorns’ defensive backs, Arkansas averaged just 4.9 yards per attempt.Â
CEDRIC GOLDEN: Horns did their part but CFP chances are dim with Aggies waiting
Texas football true freshman reportÂ
Sarkisian said postgame that he entered Saturday with the goal of involving a lot of players in an effort to spread snaps around and manage fatigue with a short week facing the Longhorns.Â
Article continues below this ad
That was borne out in his usage of his freshmen. Phillips was one of nine freshmen to take the field for Texas against the Razorbacks.Â
Graceson Littleton, as usual, started at slot corner, finishing the game with three tackles and three pass breakups. Jaime Ffrench Jr., Jonah Williams, Justus Terry, Daylan McCutcheon, Elijah Barnes, Lance Jackson and Nick Townsend also saw action. Williams, Barnes and Terry all registered tackles, while Townsend caught the only pass thrown his direction.Â
