Best Old Fashioned: Johnny’s Gold Brick
Johnny’s Gold Brick is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, which is truly something to toast given the fickle, tenuous nature of the industry and recalling that there was a pandemic during that span which kept drinkers away for a while. The reason folks flocked to the Heights-area craft cocktail bar before and since the shutdown was because it does what it does so well, particularly classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, one of the oldest mixed drinks around.
We love the Brick’s delicious version of this quintessential concoction for a few reasons, but primarily because the bar has put in its 10,000 hours of mixing them for Houston’s whiskey fanatics. Simply put, they’ve made more Old Fashioneds over 10 years of service than many bars in Houston or elsewhere will ever get a chance to stir. Besides their experience, the bar also affords fans Old Fashioneds at ridiculously cut-rate prices. On occasion, you can get a Johnny’s Gold Brick Old Fashioned for 2 bucks. Two dollars! On Tuesdays, you can get it paired with a tasty burger and wedge fries for under $10. You can have it for $6 during Johnny’s Happy Hour, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Best of all – no matter what you pay for it – you’ll be enjoying it in a bar which understands cocktail drinkers and welcomes them lovingly to a setting which is as classic and familiar as the drink itself.
