U.S. Supreme Court temporarily allows Texas’ new congressional map, expected to decide legality

  • November 24, 2025

AUSTIN, Texas (KLTV) – The U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing Texas’ new congressional map to decide whether racial gerrymandering was a factor in its creation. It comes after Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito restored the new map Friday after temporarily blocking a Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that blocked the map from being used.

Alito’s decision does not include an opinion on the case. Instead, it gives all nine justices time to discuss the case before making comments or decisions on it. Their decision determines whether Texas keeps the new redrawn map or returns to the map it drew in 2021. However, the state of Texas is asking for the case to be reviewed quickly, as the filing deadline for candidates of the midterm elections is Dec. 8, only two weeks away.

Currently, Texas is operating under the new 2025 map, with several candidates campaigning in their redrawn districts. If the map is reverted to the 2021 version, it may put polling places and individual districts under major crunch.
