The young driver stopped and showed no signs of impairment, according to Houston police.

HOUSTON — A teenage driver was released without charges after he hit and killed a man lying in the middle of a northeast Houston road on Saturday night, according to the Houston Police Department.

Investigators said the 16-year-old was heading east on Quitman Street when he ran over something around 8:25 p.m. The teen heard people screaming, so he stopped and discovered that he had struck a man lying on Quitman near Davis, just west of the Eastex Freeway.

The 36-year-old victim died at the scene.

“And family has shown up, and we do believe that this person was in distress and wanted to commit suicide earlier today, and so that could be the potential reason why they were [lying] in the roadway,” HPD Sgt. Rebecca Davis said at the scene.

The young driver showed no signs of impairment, according to HPD.

The victim’s name hasn’t been released.

The investigation is ongoing.
