How do you track down the best chicken fried steak in Lubbock? The answer is simple: ask a guy who has eaten a lot of them.

As it turns out, October 26th is officially “Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day,” and while that’s a fun trivia nugget, it’s also kind of hilarious—because in Lubbock, it might as well be every day. There are very few 24-hour periods in the Hub City when someone isn’t sinking a fork into golden-fried comfort goodness.

The day itself is the brainchild of Jefferey Yarbrough, a Texas entrepreneur who works in real estate but also champions this delicious holiday. He didn’t just promote it—he founded Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day back in 2011, and since then, he’s become a bit of a statewide authority. Each year, he releases his list of the best chicken fried steaks across Texas. Presumably he’s tried them all, and even if you don’t want to take his word as gospel, you have to admit: it makes for great debate fuel.

Two Lubbock Restaurants Earn Top Honors for Chicken Fried Steak

On his official list of “The Best Chicken Fried Steaks of 2025,” two Lubbock spots earned recognition—and honestly, it’s tough to argue with either pick. His choices for the Hub City are Riversmith’s Chicken & Catfish and The Cast Iron Grill. While I haven’t personally visited The Cast Iron Grill, I can vouch for Riversmith’s. Their chicken fried steak is spot-on, and as a bonus, they serve one of the best fried fish plates in town and an open-faced chili burger that deserves its own holiday.

Sometimes Riversmith’s gets overshadowed by other favorites, but with the founder of Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day shining a spotlight on them, maybe Lubbock won’t overlook them nearly as much. Whether you agree with Yarbrough or want to build your own list, one thing is for sure: Lubbock continues to serve up some of the best comfort food in Texas—and that’s saying something.
