San Antonio’s South BBQ has officially opened the doors of its new location at 2100 N. Main Avenue, marking a major milestone for pitmaster and owner Andrew Samia.
The restaurant’s original South Side location, 2011 Mission Road, debuted in 2018, but closed this January, kicking off the months-long site relocation effort that culminated with its recent relocation to the Monte Vista Historic District.
“It has been a journey getting to this new space, but I think the journey itself, as well as the people involved, are what make it so special,” said Samia, who’s also a partner in San Antonio’s Curry Boys chain. “I feel like this restaurant is finally a representation of who I am.”
South BBQ may have a new location, but the menu remains true to its root: post oak-smoked meats, barbecue tacos, stacked sandwiches and scratch-made sides such as borracho beans and creamed elote.
The relocation has been more than three years in the making, according to Samia. He originally pursued purchasing the building himself, going as far as commissioning renderings, but was unable to secure a deal. When the property later sold to real-estate company Headwall Investments, the new ownership embraced his vision.
“They said, ‘We love that idea, tell him we’ll build it for him,’” Samia said. “So they literally built me my dream restaurant and I could not be more grateful.”
Samia and his wife Rachel — who also creates all of the restaurant’s desserts — spent months refining every detail, intent on crafting a space that reflected their shared vision. General manager Brandee Rosas shepherded the project through its buildout and oversaw staffing and logistics.
The pitmaster said those efforts will be evident on the plate. He continues to personally trim and smoke every brisket served at both South BBQ and Curry Boys.
“Almost 15 years into being a restaurant owner in San Antonio, we couldn’t be more proud and excited to share our craft and this space with the community,” he said.
South BBQ is open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week.
