Oklahoma State has hired North Texas head coach Eric Morris as its next football coach.
Oklahoma State announced the hiring on Tuesday following reports from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger and ESPN. Terms of his contract were not reported.
“Today begins the next era of Oklahoma State Football,” athletic director Chad Weiberg said, via a statement. “I am thrilled to introduce Eric Morris, his wife Maggie and their boys Jack and George to the OSU Family.
“Coach Morris has proven his ability to build and lead winning football programs. He has consistently identified, recruited, and developed some of the best players in college football.”
Morris, 40, has been the head coach at North Texas for three seasons. He’s led the Mean Green to a 10-1 record this season following 5-7 and 6-7 campaigns in his first two seasons. North Texas has a shot at making the College Football Playoff as the highest-ranked Group of Five team.

Morris built an offensive powerhouse at UNT
Under Morris, North Texas leads college football with 46.3 points per game while averaging 503.3 yards of offense in 2025. Oklahoma State is counting on Morris to develop a potent offensive attack and a competitive program in Stillwater.
Per Dellenger, Morris would continue to coach North Texas if it advances to the AAC championship game and the CFP. If so, Morris would be the first coach in the CFP to have another college job lined up. UNT is in first place in the AAC and has one remaining game against Temple on its regular-season schedule.

Prior to joining North Texas, Morris spent a season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Washington State in 2022. There, he helped develop future No. 1 NFL Draft pick Cam Ward, who played two seasons for the Cougars before his breakout 2024 campaign at Miami made him a coveted pro prospect.

Morris has also worked with Patrick Mahomes. He spent 2013-17 on the Texas Tech coaching staff, including four seasons as its offensive coordinator. Mahomes was the quarterback at Texas Tech from 2014-17 before joining the Kansas City Chiefs as a first-round draft pick. He’s since gone on to win three Super Bowls, three Super Bowl MVPs and two NFL MVP awards, among other accolades.
Cowboys turn final page on Mike Gundy era
Morris will take over at Oklahoma State for interim head coach Doug Meacham, who replaced longtime head coach Mike Gundy midseason. Oklahoma State fired Gundy in September following a 1-2 start. Gundy was in his 21st season as head coach at the time of his dismissal after taking the job in 2005.

Morris will be tasked with reviving a program that not long ago was frequently competitive in the Big 12. Oklahoma State has lost 10 straight games to fall to 1-10 after winning its season opener against UT Martin. It’s 0-8 and in last place in the Big 12.
This will be Oklahoma State’s second consecutive losing season after a 3-9 campaign in 2024. Prior to that, Oklahoma State had produced a winning record in each season since Gundy’s first in 2005.
