Thanksgiving holiday weekend forecast

  • November 26, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Thanksgiving day weather will be dry and, for the time of year, rather mild. Over the holiday weekend, however, much colder air will move into the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area.

Leading up to Thanksgiving, weather today will be dry under a partly cloudy to mostly sunny sky. The afternoon will be much cooler, with highs slightly below average for all but the southern viewing area.

The wind will become southerly and increase to around 10 to 20 mph. That will add a chill to the air – if you’re in the breeze.

Thanksgiving begins fair and cold. The afternoon, though cool, will be mild. Highs will range from the upper 50s in the northern viewing area to the low 60s in the south. Though that is cool, with a light wind, it will be a mild afternoon. Clouds will begin to move in during the afternoon.

Though mostly cloudy, most of the area will remain dry Friday. The exception is the far southeastern viewing area where a slight chance of a shower or thundershower will reside, mainly in the afternoon and mainly around the Scurry County area.

A cold front will move across West Texas Saturday. Much colder air follow, with temperatures dropping to their lowest levels of the season to date.

As the cold settles in, there is a chance of showers Sunday night through Monday night. At this time the chance of measurable precipitation during that time is low, and anticipated amounts light.

There is still much time and ground to cover before these changes begin. Which means there remains much room for changes to the outlook between now and then. We will continue to fine tune our forecast throughout the week.

ON THIS DATE

On this date in 2015, November 26: Behind a sharp cold front that ignited a few strong thunderstorms late in the afternoon on Thanksgiving Day, freezing rain and drizzle developed late in the evening and continued on and off through Saturday the 28th. The brunt of the ice fell on Black Friday which dealt a heavy blow to area merchants expecting strong holiday sales.

Thousands of residents in Motley, Dickens, Cottle, and Childress Counties were without power for up to three days due to about 100 miles of fallen utility lines and poles. Scores of vehicle accidents, mostly minor, were common especially on Lubbock overpasses where around 1/4″ of ice accumulated.
