After three years at Pearl and six in Southtown, health-conscious snack bar The Good Kind is gone for good. Chef and owner Tim “The Girl” McDiarmid says she has permanently closed the trend-setting San Antonio restaurant, while the Ivy Hall event and catering businesses live on under new ownership.
The shutter wasn’t a seismic shock. In March, the property at 1127 S St Mary’s St was listed for sale, and the restaurant temporarily closed in late June. At the time, McDiarmid told CultureMap that she was assessing the value of the property.
Although she didn’t elaborate on the reasons for making that closure permanent, her Instagram profile no longer lists any food-related businesses. Instead, she has been focusing more on The Bravery Strategy, a strategic coaching and consulting firm for businesses.

McDiarmid first popped up on San Antonio’s dining scene in 2011 with the launch of Tim the Girl Catering, later launching the Good Kind Café kiosk in Pearl’s Bottling Department food hall in 2017. Both menus focused on a farm-to-table ethos established early from her rural Canadian upbringing.
In late 2018, she branched out to the event business, debuting Ivy Hall on the grounds of a former Sun-Glo service station that most recently housed The Monterrey. A second location of The Good Kind followed in February 2019, which added beer, wine, and batched cocktails into the mix.
McDiarmid shuttered the original Pearl outpost in January 2020. The decision to depart, she said, came from a desire to streamline her energies on the King William operation and her catering business.
It’s unclear who has taken over operations at Ivy Hall, but it is still available for bookings. The space has become one of San Antonio’s most popular venues, hosting everything from weddings to culinary competitions.
