The No. 16 Texas Longhorns go into the annual Lone Star Showdown against the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies on Friday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with a lot more than usual on the line.
On top of the normal stakes of the rivalry, a 9-3 Texas team, with wins over two likely CFP teams — Oklahoma and Texas A&M — has a case for the College Football Playoff. They will need some help from other big rivalry week matchups, but the biggest domino to fall in that is beating your biggest rival at home to close out the regular season.
The Aggies a lot of hype nationally, thanks to a high-powered offense led by quarterback Marcel Reed, but an argument can be made that they haven’t played a team in the same weight class as them. While Texas might not be in the same weight class on paper, they have the talent to push this Texas A&M squad and make things interesting.
