The latest Lone Star Showdown-renewed matchup between Texas football and the Texas A&M Aggies is over, and the SEC rivalry series continues to go Texas’ way.
The No. 16 Longhorns trailed No. 3 Texas A&M by a touchdown at halftime, but put the clamps on the Aggies over the final two quarters in a 27-17 win at Royal-Memorial Stadium in the regular-season finale for both teams. Texas did it behind a couple of big plays from Arch Manning, a back-breaking interception by Michael Taaffe and the juice from a rabid home crowd that was oh so ready to see them quash the Aggies’ travel plans to the SEC championship game. And Texas did it without the services of star linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., who was ruled out just before the game with his hand injury.

With the win, Texas (9-3) beat A&M for the second straight year, denied the Aggies (11-1) a shot at the conference title game for the second straight year, and sent the Georgia Bulldogs into next week’s title game instead of A&M. It’ll now be either Alabama or Ole Miss opposite the Bulldogs. A&M still will make the College Football Playoff, however. But the Longhorns? Who knows. But Friday’s big win in the regular-season finale was their third over a top-10 team this season, the Texas brand is as big as ever and the CFP selection committee at least has something to debate.

Quintrevion Wisner just loves playing A&M
Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner must love seeing maroon. Last year, he enjoyed a career night in College Station when he ran for 186 yards on 33 carries, and he broke out of the season-long doldrums Friday by reaching 100 yards for the first time this season. In fact, it was Texas’ first 100-yard rushing performance since the first-round CFP win over Clemson last December. Wisner tallied 155 yards on 19 carries while providing the balance that makes Manning particularly effective. If the Longhorns can show this type of balance on offense, they’ll move the ball on anyone. Wisner’s last two games against the Aggies: 52 carries for 341 yards. That’s an average of 6.5 yards per carry.
Special teams come through for Texas
Ethan Burke did a little bit of everything for the Longhorns, but his biggest impacts came on special teams when he blocked a Texas A&M field-goal attempt. (He also later prevented a probable punt return touchdown by A&M’s KC Concepcion when he held on to the back of Concepcion’s jersey long enough for a teammate to catch up and corral him. Had Burke not been able to hold onto that stretched-out jersey, only UT punter Jack Bouwmeester would’ve stood between the Aggies’ star receiver and a touchdown.) So, credit Burke for making a potential 10-point difference in the game. And speaking of Bouwmeester, he pinned the Aggies deep routinely with his punts with the Longhorns offense struggling in the first half. Without those efforts in the third phase, Texas could have faced a halftime deficit much larger than 10-3.

What a way to say goodbye for Michael Taaffe
Texas safety Michael Taaffe said he felt conflicted as he went through Senior Day ceremonies last season, wondering whether or not he should return for one final season with the Longhorns. There was no such conflict Friday. Taaffe is out of eligibility at the end of this season. But he certainly ended his career at DKR on a high note, intercepting Marcel Reed to snuff out a promising Texas A&M drive late in the fourth quarter and protect a two-score Texas lead.
Steve Sarkisian impresses as a play-caller in win
Texas limped its way to 112 yards of offense in the first half while falling behind 10-3. But credit Texas coach Steve Sarkisian for making the needed adjustments against Texas A&M’s Mike Elko and the Aggies defense. Texas had 189 yards of offense in the third quarter alone and ended the game with 397 yards. Sarkisian earned his stripes as a play caller in the second half while Texas handed the Aggies their first loss of the season.

Up next for Texas: the waiting game.
Have the Longhorns done enough to become the first three-loss team to earn a CFP invitation without the automatic qualification of winning a power conference championship? Sarkisian certainly made their case on the ABC broadcast immediately after Friday night’s win.
So what’s next? Texas will watch next week’s SEC championship game between Georgia and either Alabama or Ole Miss. The Longhorns will continue to recruit ahead of early signing day. And they’ll wait for the CFP selection show on Dec. 7. After that, a bowl game for sure. But will that game be part of the CFP bracket?
