The arguments will persist over what Manning is and what Manning isn’t. Is he a generational talent or, as one column in The Athletic posited earlier this season, a flop? Is he a future first overall NFL draft pick or a college football burnout? Is he a quarterback with rare physical gifts or a nepotism baby living off his family name? Every football fan has an opinion. Every talk show host has a hot take.

Nothing Manning did in Friday’s 27-17 victory over previously unbeaten Texas A&M is likely to impact the relentless din of discourse that follows him everywhere he goes. But it did add another win to his ledger. That makes six in the last seven games.

Back when Manning was struggling, and the hot-take typhoon presiding over his every move seemed certain he’d never amount to anything, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said he was playing like a first-year starting quarterback. So what’s he playing like now?
“Just a guy trying to win games,” Manning said Friday night. “Do whatever it takes to win games.”

Against the Aggies (11-1, 7-1 SEC), that meant scurrying out of the pocket and throwing on the run to Ryan Wingo at the back of the end zone, depending on the wide receiver to make an acrobatic catch on a ball that could have been placed better. It meant shaking a Texas A&M linebacker out of his shoes on a designed quarterback run that netted 35 yards and put No. 16 Texas (9-3, 6-2) up two scores with 7 minutes, 4 seconds remaining. It meant playing turnover-free football while A&M’s Marcel Reed, Manning’s Heisman Trophy-contending opposite number, threw a pair of backbreaking interceptions late.

“I’m so proud of Arch, because you go into a season and all of the hoopla and all the stuff surrounding him, and then he’s playing like a first-year starter, and he’s getting beat up from every angle,” Sarkisian said. “He never lost his work ethic or his focus.”

Winning doesn’t always generate clips that wow fans on social media. It doesn’t always validate astonishing levels of preseason hype. It doesn’t always inspire NFL scouts to scribble praise in their notebooks. Sometimes winning looks like 12-for-27 for 132 yards against Kentucky, playing behind a helpless offensive line. Sometimes winning looks like 25-for-33 for 328 yards against Vanderbilt.
Behind the scenes, though, the requirements don’t vary.

“A winning quarterback, he has to be the smartest player on the field,” UT tight end Jack Endries said. “He has to be a great vocal leader. He has to earn everyone’s respect and be able to command a huddle. And then you got to be able to play football at that point and be talented enough to be 6-foot-4 like Arch and run a 4.5 (second 40-yard dash) like he’s going to. I think he has all the intangibles.”

Manning’s defensive teammates put their view more simply. Linebacker Liona Lefau said he’d go to war for Manning. Defensive end Ethan Burke said winning quarterbacks have to make it clear that they care.

“Smart, and someone you can get behind,” Burke said when asked for his definition. “So Arch Manning.”
Mimicking the curve of his season-long performance, Manning initially struggled Friday. He completed only eight of his 22 pass attempts in the first half for 51 yards. In the second half, he was 6-for-8 for 128 yards while breaking off the big run, too.
By his own admission, Manning didn’t play well to start. He pulled it together and gave the Longhorns what they needed to win, anyway.

Will the symmetry continue? Will a victory over the third-ranked Aggies — the third top-10 win of the season for Texas — push the Longhorns into the College Football Playoff field after they dropped two of their first five games?
“If you don’t think we’re one of the best 12 teams in the country,” Manning said, “I don’t know what to tell you.”
