Texas volleyball suffered a wrenching five-set loss to Kentucky Tuesday in the championship match of the SEC Tournament, but the Longhorns could get a big win on Selection Sunday. When the NCAA Tournament’s selection committee releases its field of 64, Texas (23-3) is expected to receive one of the coveted top four seeds.
Here’s what to know about the NCAA’s volleyball tournament selection show.
The field will be revealed Sunday during an hour-long broadcast on ESPN starting at 5Â p.m.
The NCAA volleyball tournament is similar to the basketball tournament and will feature 64 teams — 31 automatic qualifiers and 33 at-large selections. The selection committee will seed the top 32 teams with the top 16 identified in rank order and assigned a seed grouping from 1 to 4. The balance of the ranked teams, in turn, are assigned to one of the remaining seed groupings. Once the seed assignment is finalized, it remains unchanged while placing the teams into the championship bracket. First- and second-round conference matchups will be avoided.
The Longhorns almost certainly will be seeded in the top four based on their current No. 2 RPI ranking by the NCAA, which was released Saturday. Top-ranked Nebraska, the nation’s only unbeaten team, tops the RPI list and will likely be the No. 1 overall seed while SEC champion Kentucky seems guaranteed of a top-four seed. Arizona State and Pittsburgh seem like the top contenders for the final top-four seed.
The top four seeds will serve as regional hosts, which means they would play their first four NCAA Tournament matches at home and not travel until a potential trip to the Final Four Dec. 18-21 in Kansas City, Mo. Texas hasn’t served as a regional host since 2022.
The Aggies, who fell to Texas in the SEC Tournament semifinals, are No. 10 in the NCAA’s RPI ratings. They will likely serve as hosts for the first two rounds as a top-16 seed but will travel for a potential regional appearance.
The first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament take place Dec. 4-6 on selected campuses, with the two regional rounds happening Dec. 11-14.
