High school basketball is back in the Borderland, and we’ve got you covered with all the action you may have missed. From boys and girls hoops to city wide rankings, here is the state of high school basketball around El Paso.

#21 Chapin notches 100th straight win against local competition
The Chapin boys basketball team knocked off Parkland 82-39 to extend their streak of wins against El Paso teams to 100, a streak that dates back all the way to February of 2021. The Huskies are off to a 4-3 start to the new year, with all three losses coming to state ranked squads in the Alamo City Hoops Classic. They made their debut in the TABC state poll this week, coming in at #21.
Franklin continues hot start with win against NM powerhouse
After missing the playoffs last year for the first time since head coach Adam Castillo’s first season in 2017, the Franklin Cougars have started the new year on a mission, racing to a 5-2 record. The Cougars only two losses also came at the Alamo City Hoops Classic, but they also knocked off 5A #4 Corpus-Christi Veterans Memorial at the tournament to put the whole state on watch. They continued their hot start with a win against Organ Mountain last night, taking down the perennial contender from the state of New Mexico, 69-62. The Cougars will now prep for another tough out of town opponent, as they will travel to Odessa to take on the Permian Panthers next week.
El Dorado goes on the road and takes down Carlsbad
The El Dorado Aztecs also hosted a New Mexico squad, as Carlsbad came into the Sun City looking to start their season off with a win. The Aztecs, however, were able to defend home court and came out with the 59-52 win. Second year head coach Justin Avalos has his team 4-2, and they will sure to be someone to look out for in 2-5A.

Burges takes down Pebble Hills in a battle of defending district champs
Burges avenged their loss to Pebble Hills from last season, taking down the Spartans 46-40 in a battle of teams that both won their districts’ last year. The Mustangs have begun their journey of a possible three-peat in district 1-5A with a record of 5-4, with three of those losses coming to out of town competition in a tournament. They’ve got a big matchup against Franklin coming up.
Hanks wears down Chapin
Hanks picked up a big win against crosstown foe Chapin, taking down a Husky team that projects to be a contender in 1-5A. They held Chapin to only 28 points in the 42-28 win. After going 10-3 in district play last year and finishing second in their district, the Knights are looking to get over the hump and claim a district title this year. They’ll have to go through the dominant Americas Trailblazers, who won the district title last year.
Franklin gets back on track against Andress
Allyson De La O led her Franklin Cougar squad to a win in northeast El Paso, taking down the Eagles 53-23. The Cougars have already played 13 games and sit at 6-7, but don’t let their record fool you, as they’ve played in multiple out of town tournaments. They’ll look to get over .500 against a good Burges team next week, which will be an interesting test for a Franklin team looking to get back into the district title mix after finishing fourth last year.
