Possible record breaking chill on the way as Arctic air slams into the region

  • December 2, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – It’s going to feel like someone left the freezer door open, when you step outside on Sunday morning.

An arctic airmass will settle into the region Saturday night, bringing dangerously cold temperatures to the South Plains.

A strong cold front has passed through the region, flipping winds to the north and knocking temperatures down fast.

Behind it, the air pressure shot up quickly, resulting in breezy winds – a sign that cold, heavy air is pouring in.

Winds will lighten a bit on Saturday night, but that cold air will continue spilling in. The Arctic air mass will continue spreading down south. Low clouds will increase, but not enough to trap much heat.

Overnight lows will drop into teens and 20s by sunrise Sunday, and we won’t warm up much after that.

Sunday, daytime highs will struggle to stay above freezing in some areas. Sunday could challenge the record for coldest high temperature ever recorded on this date in Lubbock.

With these cold temperatures remember to protect your pipes, plants, pets, and sprinklers. Be careful as any standing water could freeze and make sidewalks slippery.

Clouds will increase during the day which usually traps heat, but not with an air mass this cold.

Monday, another cold front will arrive and keep high temperatures in the 40s.
