KC Lady Rangers 1-1 in Plano

PLANO — The Kilgore College Lady Rangers went 1-1 over the weekend in Plano at the Collin County Classic, falling to South Plains in overtime (86-82) and rebounding to knock off Collin County 78-75.

In the win over Collin County, KC led 38-29 at halftime and 54-53 after three quarters before outscoring the host team by a bucket in the final 10 minutes.

Madison Bob paced Kilgore with 21 points in the loss. Ja’Sani Green added 16, Kennedi Smith 12, Rhylei Hendrick and Camryn Beck nine apiece, Zariyah Edwards five, Rhianna Battles four and Kelsie Magnum, Kira Johnson and Anyla Herbert two each.

Beck had 12 rebounds, King seven and Green five. King handed out three assists and added two steals, and Janiya Murphy and Johnson chipped in with three steals apiece.

Against South Plains, KC trailed 19-18 after one quarter, led 38-37 at halftime, trailed 56-52 heading into the fourth and tied things to force overtime by outscoring South Plains 20-16. South Plains held a 14-10 edge in the five-minute overtime period.

King led the way for the Lady Rangers with 21 points. Herbert added 14, Bob 13, Green 11, Edwards seven, Magnum six, Johnson four and Murphy two. Magnum, Edwards and Murphy all yanked down seven rebounds, with King adding six and Herbert five. Murphy and Johnson handed out three assists apiece, King had four steals and Edwards blocked three shots.

The Lady Rangers, now 6-4 on the year, will host Arlington Baptist University’s JV at 2 p.m. Saturday in non-conference play.

Kilgore has six games remaining on the schedule before opening Region XIV Conference play on Jan. 10 at home against Blinn.

Following Saturday’s game against Arlington Baptist, the Lady Rangers will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take on Chipola at 1 p.m. on Dec. 13 and Three Rivers at noon on Dec. 14 at Shelton State Community College.

KC will then be idle until hosting the Evelyn Blalock Classic on Jan. 2-3 at Masters Gymnasium. The Lady Rangers will face Hill College at 3 p.m. on Jan. 2 and Midland at 1 p.m. on Jan. 3.

The non-conference schedule concludes on Jan. 7 with a home game against Western Gulf Collegiate.

MEN

The Rangers will open Region XIV Conference play on the road Wednesday against defending national champion Trinity Valley.

Kilgore is 7-1 on the year, with the lone loss being a 67-66 setback to McLennan. Trinity Valley is also 7-1 with its lone loss coming against Midland (75-62).

Tip off is set for 7 p.m. in Athens.

The Rangers will then return home on Saturday to host Lamar State-Port Arthur in a 4 p.m. contest at Masters Gymnasium.
