EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — On Monday, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation announced that the Texas Transportation Commission has approved over $31 million in funding for the Paso del Norte Trail.

According to the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, the $31 million will go towards Transportation Alternatives for two major segments of the Paso del Norte Trail.

This investment supports the development of a 70-mile trail system benefiting El Paso residents, as the trail aims to promote active transportation and ecotourism.

The funding will extend the City of El Paso segment, a shared-use path along Magoffin Ave. to the El Paso Zoo, and construct a connection in the El Paso County segment between Socorro, San Elizario, and Clint.

According to the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, the funding approval for these two projects brings the total amount secured for the trail to $88 million, with 21 miles already complete, and 31 miles funded for design or construction.

Joaquín Rodriguez, Director of Grant Funded Programs, said, “This funding moves us one step closer to completing a vibrant network of trails that connects people to parks, neighborhoods, and places they love.”

Commissioner Iliana Holguin added, “The Mission Valley communities stand to gain safer routes for walking and cycling.”

Jose Bocanegra, Transportation Alternatives Coordinator, said, “The Texas Transportation Commission is proud to support projects that expand active transportation and improve safety across the state, through the Transportation Alternatives Program. The Paso del Norte Trail is more than a path—it’s a connection point that brings communities together, supports local economies, and improves quality of life for all residents within the TxDOT El Paso District.”
