SAN ANTONIO – Parents and students at McCollum High School are expressing outrage and concern following the arrest of a teacher charged with the sexual assault of a student.

The teacher, Eduardo Cantu, who served as the mariachi instructor, was taken into custody last night. The alleged victim is a 16-year-old student, and police have indicated there may be more victims.

According to the arrest report, the alleged assault occurred at the school on November 10. Concerns had been raised prior to the incident, with two custodians reporting Cantu to the administration due to his practice of keeping the classroom door shut while alone with female students.

The report details disturbing allegations, including Cantu hugging and kissing the victim and reportedly saying, “I shouldn’t be doing this.”

Students at McCollum High are reportedly shaken by the incident.

One student said, “They were really emotional about it because they wouldn’t expect it out of him… there was little things about like him pulling girls to the side just conversations just little things add up.”

Parents are particularly concerned about the possibility of other victims. One person, who has a sister attending the school, said, “It’s not just about my little sister; it’s about all the other little kids out here who could potentially be harmed.”

Another parent, April Lopez, expressed hope for a thorough investigation, stating, “We pray for those that are a part of the incident and hopefully the school can get down to the bottom of it.”

The Harlandale Independent School District released a statement asserting that they “followed all required procedures as soon as the allegation was brought forward.”

Police are urging any additional victims to contact the San Antonio Police Department’s special victims unit.

Some parents have also voiced frustration, noting this is not the first such incident at the school. Earlier this year, a coach resigned amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student.
