Bishop Arts Theatre Center announces its 2025 production of Black Nativity. The work is written and directed by Calvin J. Walker. The show is a reimagining of Langston Hughes’ holiday classic.

It weaves familial love with ancestral guidance and the story of Jesus’ birth. The production returns as a cherished tradition this December.

Audiences will follow a family during the holiday season. They gather while coping with recent loss. The retelling includes reflection and uplifting performances. Black Nativity explores grief, healing, and the strength of community.

Original music adds depth and a vibrant sound to the story. Walker and Steven A. Taylor composed the new music together.

“Black Nativity is more than a holiday show,” said Calvin J. Walker. “It celebrates resilience, legacy, and gathering.” He noted that the arrangements honor the roots of Langston Hughes’ work. He also said they create a refreshed musical landscape for audiences.

Performances will take place at Bishop Arts Theatre Center at 215 South Tyler Street in Dallas. Shows will run throughout December. Tickets will be available online. Patrons can visit bishopartstheatre.org for more information.
