For most, artificial intelligence is thought of as technology and machines doing the work of human beings.

For a team of researchers led by UT San Antonio experts, AI is a problem-solving tool with great capacity for making human life better.

In this episode of the Launchpad podcast, UT San Antonio’s John Elizondo sits down with Dhireesha Kudithipudi, the founding director of the MATRIX AI Consortium for Human Well-Being at UT San Antonio and a global leader in brain-inspired and energy-efficient AI.

“MATRIX is really built around a single guiding question, ‘How do we design AI systems that improve human well-being?’” Kudithipudi said.

As the creative mind behind the Consortium, Kudithipudi builds bridges across science, healthcare and policy to get human intelligence and artificial intelligence to work in harmony.

Her team’s approach to AI is uncommon in academic settings, which tends to focus more on building performance-driven AI technologies. “We are trying to put humans in the center of it,” she said.

Listen as Kudithipudi discusses how MATRIX was tapped early on to help a community better understand the spread of COVID-19 during the recent pandemic and how UT San Antonio’s collaborative work is positioning the university as a worldwide leader in AI.
