Austin police will give a 9:30 a.m. update today as the investigation into Texas A&M student Brianna Aguilera’s death remains open and her family pushes for answers.

HOUSTON — Austin police will hold a press conference this morning as the investigation continues into the death of 19-year-old Texas A&M student Brianna Aguilera, whose parents insist there is “much more information” still to uncover about what happened the night she died.

APD Homicide Detective Robert Marshall is scheduled to speak at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Austin. The update comes as questions and public concern continue to grow around the circumstances leading up to Aguilera’s death.

What we know about the case so far

Houston attorney Tony Buzbee says he is representing Aguilera’s family. His firm and the Gamez Law Firm announced Wednesday they were retained by Aguilera’s parents after her death in Austin last Friday.

Aguilera had reportedly been tailgating ahead of the Aggies-Longhorns game and became intoxicated before she was kicked out. She later returned to her friend’s apartment in West Campus.

Her mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, said she received a call the following day.

“A detective called me telling me that my daughter had been found in a morgue, deceased,” she told CBS Austin. “I was in disbelief. I yelled, I shouted, I told the officer that it wasn’t true, that he was lying to me … it was just devastation to the max. I was destroyed.”

Austin police previously said there were “no indications of suspicious circumstances,” something Rodriguez strongly disputes.

“My daughter was not suicidal. She loved life. She wanted to graduate. She wanted to become an attorney. Like, there was never one ounce of her that was ever sad in that manner,” she said.

APD: Case remains open and active

On Tuesday night, Austin police confirmed the case was still open, active and under investigation.

“We recognize the deep pain that accompanies the unexpected passing of a loved one… Our detectives remain committed to investigating the full details surrounding the death of Ms. Aguilera.”

Family seeking answers; attorney challenges early conclusions

In a statement posted Wednesday, Buzbee said Aguilera’s parents are convinced there is more to uncover.

“Brianna’s parents firmly believe there is much more information that needs to be discovered regarding their daughter’s death. They feel certain this was not an accident. This was certainly not a suicide. This family deserves straight answers. We hope we can help them get those answers.”

Buzbee is planning a separate news conference this Friday, where both of Aguilera’s parents are expected to speak about the case.
