A routine traffic stop in northwest Houston escalated into a violent confrontation Thursday morning, ending in a crash, foot chase, and shootout that was captured on multiple surveillance videos.
According to Houston Police, the incident began shortly after 8:30 a.m., when officers attempted to pull over a man wanted on an outstanding theft warrant. The driver sped away, leading officers on a brief chase before losing control at the intersection of Antoine Drive and West 34th Street.
Video shows the white sedan careening through the intersection, striking a light pole, and flipping over. The driver, dressed in black, climbed out of the overturned vehicle and ran.
Witness Alexa Savillon watched the crash unfold.
“He’s trying to make this red light and he couldn’t, so he hit the pole,” Savillon said. “He jumped out and starts running down the sidewalk on the side with the gun about to shoot at the police.”
The suspect ran about half a block before taking cover in the employee parking lot of the Coleman Hanna manufacturing plant. Surveillance video obtained by ABC13 shows him moving between parked vehicles, including a Jeep and a blue SUV, as officers closed in.
At one point, the man is seen crawling on the ground before getting up and appearing to fire through the Jeep’s windshield toward officers.
“The suspect again engaged the officers by firing, and our officers fired back, striking the suspect multiple times,” Assistant Police Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra said. “The suspect was transported; he’s alive in critical condition.”
The video does not show the moment the suspect was struck, but officers say he collapsed in a corner of the parking lot. Police then approached using a tactical shield before taking him into custody and transporting him for medical treatment.
Two women were also inside the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the crash. Police say one of them had an outstanding warrant and was taken into custody.
“You can imagine-you’re just trying to pull over a traffic stop, and you start getting shot at,” Menendez-Sierra said. “You end up in an officer-involved shooting.”
As of Thursday afternoon, Houston Police and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office had not yet released the names of the suspect or the woman who was arrested.
No officers were injured. Several bystanders witnessed parts of the chase and shootout, but no additional injuries were reported.
