HOUSTON – Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan will serve as grand marshal of the 2026 Downtown Rodeo Parade, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announced Thursday.
Ruskan, 26, earned national recognition for his heroic lifesaving efforts during the historic July 4, 2025, flash floods in the Texas Hill Country.
The New Jersey native, now based at Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, executed multiple high-risk rescues amid raging floodwaters, saving 165 children.
His courageous actions highlighted the vital role Coast Guard rescue swimmers play in disaster response. Ruskan continues active duty, supporting search-and-rescue operations along the Gulf Coast.
“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo proudly honors the men and women who protect our communities, often in the most dangerous situations imaginable,” said Chris Boleman, Rodeo president and CEO. “Petty Officer Ruskan represents courage, commitment and service at the highest level, and we are thrilled to welcome him as our 2026 grand marshal.”
The Downtown Rodeo Parade, a Houston tradition since 1938, officially kicks off the Rodeo season each year. The event draws thousands of spectators downtown to enjoy colorful floats, mounted patrols, trail riders, marching bands and Rodeo volunteers celebrating Western heritage.
“It’s a huge honor to be invited to be the grand marshal,” Ruskan said. “It’s one of the largest events Texas has to offer, and I couldn’t be more grateful and honored to be there along with the other Coast Guard crews that were there on July 4.”
The 2026 Downtown Rodeo Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, preceded by the Rodeo Run starting at 9 a.m., featuring wheelchair and timed races.
