Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra speaks to reporters following a shooting in Northwest Houston on Dec. 4, 2025.

A man was in critical condition after Houston police said they shot him Thursday morning following a vehicle chase in northwest Houston, where the man allegedly fired his gun at them.

The man, who was not identified by Houston Police Department (HPD) officers during a news conference, was accused of felony theft and had a warrant out for his arrest, police said. He was pulled over at 8:41 a.m. Thursday for an expired registration, according to police.

The man was initially compliant, according to HPD Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra, providing the officer who pulled him over with his driver’s license and registration. When the officer ran the man’s ID, he allegedly found out the man had a felony warrant for his arrest.

At that point, the officer requested backup, police said. When police began to approach the man’s car again, the man allegedly took off, and officers began to chase him.

“The suspect began to fire a pistol at the officers while he was being pursued,” Menendez-Sierra said.

Eventually, the man lost control of his vehicle, striking a pole near the 3400 block of Antoine Drive, according to police. He allegedly tried to run away on foot while continuing to fire a gun at officers, according to Menendez-Sierra. Houston police officers fired back, striking the man “multiple times,” Menendez-Sierra said.

Two women were also in the car with the man at the time, but police said they did not immediately know the relationship between them. One of the women also had a felony warrant for a family violence-related crime, and she was arrested, according to police.

No officers or other people were harmed, police said.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office and HPD’s homicide division will do a concurrent investigation into the shooting. The two officers who shot the man are eight- and seven-year veterans of the department.
