Temperature ups and downs

  • December 9, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A plot of this week’s temperatures resembles the ups and downs of a rollercoaster, hence the phrase “rollercoaster temperatures”. A series of cold fronts will send temperatures rising before each, then falling after.

Today we are ahead of one such cold front. The day will be sunny, the afternoon breezy, and highs well-above average. For Lubbock, this time of year, that’s 56°.

The arrival of the first front is expected before sunrise tomorrow. That will result in an overnight breeze that will help keep low temperatures, too, well-above average. For Lubbock that is 29°.

Much cooler but still mild for late Fall weather will follow tomorrow. Though highs will be 10 to as much as 15 degrees cooler than today, they still will be slightly above average for the date.

Wednesday morning’s front, and the fronts that follow Thursday night and late Saturday, are “dry fronts.” That is, they will not bring showers to the South Plains area.

Our generally sunny days and fair nights, with a few clouds from time to time, will continue into the weekend.

On This Date

On this date in 2012, following a strong cold front an upper disturbance swung across the South Plains accompanied by a very narrow band of snow. A light coating, generally around 1/2″, was noted over much of the South Plains with up to one inch of snow measured in Muleshoe. Areas off the Caprock (the eastern KCBD/FOX34 viewing area) only received a light dusting. Patchy ice and frigid temperatures in the single digits and teens caused hazardous travel conditions the following morning. At least 26 vehicle accidents, mostly in Lubbock, were reported. West of Reese Center on Highway 114, a 56 year old woman died when she lost control of her minivan.
