LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Changing wind directions will bring significant changes in temperatures today through the weekend.
Winds returning to the west and southwest will help send temperatures today soaring to nearly 20 degrees above the average for December 11. It will bring Lubbock to within about five degrees of its record high for the date, 80°, set in 1939.

Under a sunny sky – a few clouds from time to time – wind speeds will increase to around 10 to 20 mph. A little on the breezy side.
A weak cold front shifts winds to the north by early tomorrow morning, with the somewhat cooler air dropping afternoon temperatures back into the 60s. Still about ten degrees above the average high for the time of year.

Temperatures climb again Saturday with winds shifting back to the west-southwest. Temperatures in the KCBD/FOX34 viewing area again will peak well-above average for the season.
The wind then will shift to the north behind a cold front expected to arrive in the northern viewing area in the early to mid-afternoon Saturday, central areas including Lubbock by late afternoon, and the southern viewing area by early evening.

After the front, winds will gradually swing around to the northeast Sunday night. That taps into an Arctic air mass centered over the Central Plains. This will be some of the coldest air of the season so far. Back on November 30, Lubbock’s high temperature was just 34°. That was a record-cold high-temperature for the date.
A light easterly wind will result in high temperatures Sunday in the 40s.

The cold air won’t linger long. After a cold Monday morning temperatures climb to a littel above average Monday afternoon. Even warmer, and still dry, weather is expected to follow.
On This Date
On this date in 2011, dense fog formed in the early morning hours over the South and Rolling Plains. In Dickens county, two people were killed when their vehicle drove into the path of a semi-truck. No one in the semi was injured.
