LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – If you serve food to the public, Lubbock health inspectors check out the cleanliness of your establishment.
This week, it’s not a restaurant you’re used to on the low performer’s list – it’s a convenience store.
Yesway at 7822 82nd had 45 violations.
Two pans of raw bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers were stored in the walk-in cooler above ready-to-eat coffee creamer, tamales, and bottled drinks.A carton of raw shell eggs was stored on a shelf above ready to eat tamales, cheese, and precooked meats in the walk-in cooler.Uncooked sliced bacon was stored on a shelf above ready-to-eat tamales, precooked meats, cheese, and bags of RTE latte mix, in the walk-in cooler.White cutting boards stored with clean wares were visibly soiled.Employee handled cashiering duties returned to kitchen to fry food without a hand wash.Single-service plastic bags used as ice bags were stored on the bottom shelf under multiple chemical containers in the dry storage area with the ice machine.A box of urn cleaner packets was stored in the cabinet under the coffee machines over an open bag of coffee mix, and also had an open bag draped over another cleaning bottle.Eight chemical-containing containers (sanitizer) were stored on the top shelf over clean wares in the ware wash area.A stainless steel cleaner, and a spray paint can were stored on top of the ice bin of the ice machine. The unit had ice.A bagged cleaner was stored on a shelf over packaged single-service straws and coffee creamer in the drink station cabinet.Four boxes of single-service food service gloves were stored on a shelf below shelves of multiple chemicals in the dry storage room with the ice machine.The hose installed on the faucet at the mop sink is stored with the hose inside and below the flood level rim of the sink basin. No backflow prevention.An open container of chopped beef stored in the walk-in cooler (WIC) had a stamp with use-by-date of February 27, 2026. PIC states they freeze the product, then thaw when it will be in use.Two pans of raw bacon wrapped, with cream cheese jalapeno poppers, stored in the WIC, were not date marked.Open bags of precooked sausage patties, meat patties, tamales, and hot links, all stored in the WIC, were not date marked when opened.The waste pipe from the drink station that is installed to drain into the floor drain under the single-service condiments storage rack in the prep room is installed inside and below the floor drain grate.
Due to the nature and number of violations found during the present inspection, PIC and staff did not demonstrate food safety knowledge.

The garage-type door in the small nonfood equipment room on the east side of the building has large gaps in the door. The door to that room is propped open to the room with food storage and the ice machine.A box (case) of raw shell eggs was stored on the floor in the WIC. PIC states it was received yesterday.Open box of in-use ready-to-eat croissants is stored on the floor of the WIC. PIC states it was received yesterday.Three in-use tongs are being stored on the dispensing pipe of the fire suppression system of the fryer between uses.The hand sink in the prep area is not sealed to the wall.Single-service coffee filters, a skillet, popcorn bags, and plastic knives are stored in the 1-compartment sink cabinet under the sinks waste water pipes in the food prep area.A single-service plastic spoon is being used to dispense dry seasoning from a bulk container.Uncovered coffee filters stored under the 1-compartment sink in the food prep area were visibly soiled.The two prepackaged ice cream reach-in freezers in the retail area have frost build-up.Reach-in freezer bottom surfaces are visibly soiled with debris.The drink counter cabinets with food service item storage are visibly soiled with debris.Floor behind and under the drink syrup rack is visibly soiled.A personal drink and it’s lid were stored with clean wares in the ware washing area.A not-in-current-use mop was stored on the floor by the door of the food prep area.Maintenance tools were stored on a storage rack above single-service drink mix syrup, and paper napkins in the area near the fryer.Two mops, not-in-current use, are stored on the floor on each side of the ice machine.The walls on both sides of the mop sink basin are visibly damages with missing and peeling paint/wall materials.Six bottles of RTE strawberry banana yogurt drink stored in the retail side of the WIC had a use-by-date of 11/25/25. PIC states the staff is responsible for monitoring the dates.Six bottles of RTE mixed berry yogurt drink stored in the retail side of the WIC had a use-by-date of 11/23/25. PIC states the staff is responsible for monitoring the dates.The emergency exit door on the east side of the building that is visible in the retail area has a large gap on the bottom of the door. The door to the room where the ice machine is installed is propped open and is within feet of the emergency exit door.The pressed wood counters under the entire drink counter station are visibly damaged with cracks, stains, and do not meet the easily cleanable, nonporous and smooth requirements for food safety. PIC states that they have put in a work order to complete a service for the cabinets, but has no definite completion date.Cabinets under the soda machine at the front drink counter have kitty litter on the nonfood contact surfaces. Repeated violation 2/24/2025.Microwave interior surfaces are visibly damaged with peeling, bubbling plastic coating on door and chipping paint on interior surfaces. Repeated violation on last inspection from 2/24/2025.The ladies restroom did not have a hand washing sign posted.The top interior surface of the ice machine bin appears to be similar to galvanized steel.
The report shows most of the violations were corrected at the time of the inspection.
