Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian compared the Citrus Bowl — and the preparation that will take place before it — to spring practice. 

Spring ball is the part of the calendar where player development comes into sharp focus. With no need to prepare for a game every week, coaches can devote less of their energy toward game planning and more of it to making their players better.

That’s the approach Texas wants to take in the lead-up to its Dec. 31 game against Michigan. 

After that developmental period, the Citrus Bowl could help answer some questions about what the Longhorns will look like in 2026. 

What does the future of the Texas football backfield look like?

The bowl game — and the roster movement that happens prior to it — should prove insightful as the Longhorns undergo another coaching transition at the running back position.

Sarkisian fired RBs coach Chad Scott earlier this week. It’s likely that his replacement will be solidified by the time Texas takes the field against Michigan on Dec. 31. 

Which players on Texas’ roster will the new running backs coach value? Quintrevion Wisner, who has the option to declare for the NFL Draft after rushing for 597 yards and three touchdowns in nine games during the regular season, is the only returning member of the Texas backfield with any real experience.

Underclassmen Christian Clark and James Simon both saw action early on in the 2025 campaign, but failed to convert their opportunities into regular roles. 

Sarkisian said earlier this month that Texas will likely explore making a transfer addition at running back. So, with that in mind, and two more freshman RBs on the way in the 2026 class, are any members of the current roster viewed as future difference makers by the coaching staff?

The distribution of snaps in the Citrus Bowl could go a long way toward answering that question as Texas looks to revamp a rushing offense that averaged under four yards per carry for the first time since Sarkisian’s hiring.

Which freshman wide receivers have a shot to break out next season for Texas football?

Every contributing member of the Texas wide receiver corps can return in 2026, and DeAndre Moore Jr. is the only player from that group who is even eligible for the NFL Draft.

It’s a crowded room, and that played out in the way the Longhorns used — or, more accurately, didn’t use — a loaded crop of recruits signed in the 2025 cycle.

In Kaliq Lockett, Jaime Ffrench Jr., Michael Terry III and Daylan McCutcheon, the Longhorns rostered four freshman wideouts who were considered top-200 overall recruits by the 247Sports Composite. Together, they combined to play 181 offensive snaps, 126 of which came from McCutcheon. 

Without some outward movement from the players in front of them on the depth chart, each of those receivers is going to have to take steps forward to overtake the likes of Ryan Wingo, Emmett Mosley V and Parker Livingstone in order to earn more reps.

If Sarkisian does indeed approach the matchup with Michigan with a developmental mindset, those players could get an opportunity to stake a claim before the transfer portal officially opens up on Jan. 2.

How does the Texas Longhorns’ LB room shape up without Anthony Hill Jr.?

Anthony Hill Jr. announced via social media last week that he intends to enter the NFL Draft, foregoing his senior season with the Longhorns.

While it’s unclear if Hill will play against Michigan — his announcement did not state one way or another — it’s likely that Texas will use the Citrus Bowl and the practices preceding it as an opportunity to evaluate its options for the future of the position. 

Hill has started all but two games at linebacker for the Longhorns since claiming the job at the end of the 2023 season. Trey Moore, a key reserve, is out of eligibility, and Liona Lefau, who has started alongside Hill for most of the last two seasons, is draft eligible.

Ty’Anthony Smith stepped in for Hill when he missed two games with an injury. Smith, a sophomore, looks like the future of the position, with 67 tackles and six tackles for loss on his ledger in two seasons with the Longhorns.

Beyond that, it gets murky. Elijah “Bo” Barnes has been appearing on Texas’ three-deep depth chart since the beginning of the year, but has played just 24 snaps as a freshman. Jonathan Cunningham, a three-star freshman who played 16 snaps in the regular season, is the only other returning scholarship linebacker. 

Will either be entrusted with the reserve roles previously filled by Smith and Moore? The Citrus Bowl could help us answer that question.
