LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Darlene Snider has opened the Veterans Food Bank of Lubbock aiming to help area veterans needing food assistance. She’s launched a holiday food drive and is asking for the community’s help.
“We just want to be there; we want to make it easy for them, let them know we care and not have a lot of red tape or long waits for them to get exactly what they need,” Snider said.
Snider says some veterans struggle to afford basic necessities.
“A lot of our veterans, especially our disabled veterans, if they’re 90% disabled or less, the max they are getting is about $1,600 a month, and they have to pay their rent, their utilities, car payments, insurance, and that leaves very little for the food they desperately need,” Snider said.
Local businesses provide support
Area businesses have stepped up to help by providing donation drop-off bins and offering discounts when customers make donations. One of these stores is Hub City Organics, where owner Jimmy Fitzpatrick says he was happy to help.
“I am actually a veteran myself. I served in the United States Navy, as part of Desert Storm, so when they reached out to us about helping veterans, I was all on board with that,” Fitzpatrick said. “I just feel like veterans need our support year-round, not just the holidays.”
Donations needed
Snider said the holiday food drive is currently at 20 percent of its goal. She is asking the community for help, saying any donation will make a difference.

“If you don’t have time to bring donations of food, canned goods, healthy foods, frozen foods, to one of our drop-off locations, please call us and donate whatever amount financially,” Snider said. “We will go with those funds and buy all the additional food we need the day before the event,” Snider said.
Snider has partnered with local moving company Two Men and a Truck to help gather and distribute donations.
