History

HOUSTON, Texas – Second half defensive woes doom the UT Arlington women’s basketball team (5-5) on the road, falling 75-54 to the Rice Owls (8-3) on Friday afternoon inside the Tudor Fieldhouse.

After a defensive slugfest in the first half that saw 25 total turnovers between the two teams, with the Lady Mavs forcing the Owls into 14 of those, the second half saw both teams clean up the sloppy play and limiting the turnovers to 11 for the third and fourth quarters between the two, with UTA forcing Rice into eight turnovers in the second half while only committing three.

The loss snaps the Lady Mavs three-game win streak as well as UTA’s five-game win streak over Rice and falling to 5-3 all-time against the Owls while bringing their record inside Tudor Fieldhouse to an even five hundred at 2-2.

The Lady Mavs got a 20-point showing from the bench in the loss.

Mila Reynolds led the Lady Mavs with 15 points and two steals. Kira Reynolds also added nine points and two steals while Jadyn Atchison helped out with eight points and three steals.

Jeanne Rodriguez pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UTA, grabbing 16 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.

The UTA defense held Rice shooters to only 40-percent from the field, including 29.2-percent from three-point range.

The Lady Mavs continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 26-19 halftime deficit.

UTA’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Mavs faced a 53-35 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. UTA played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
