Southwest Airlines Co. is making a significant investment in Austin, Texas, announcing the opening of a new Crew Base for Pilots and Flight Attendants at Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in March 2026. The expansion is set to create more than 2,000 jobs and strengthen the airline’s presence in Central Texas, supporting long-term growth in one of its fastest-growing markets.

The new base will primarily employ Captains, First Officers, and Flight Attendants, complemented by Base Leadership and supporting operational staff. Southwest also plans to establish a dedicated training facility for Flight Attendants at the site, reflecting the airline’s commitment to ongoing workforce development and operational excellence. This addition is part of a broader business transformation strategy aimed at enhancing efficiency and improving service across its network.

Austin has long been a key hub for Southwest Airlines. In 2024, the airline operated more than 130 peak-day departures from the city, serving around 6.7 million travelers. The new base will support an expanded route network from Austin, with new service to popular leisure destinations such as Fort Myers, Florida; Palm Springs, California; and Steamboat Springs (Hayden), Colorado. This growth will bring the total number of nonstop destinations served from Austin to 53, offering travelers more flexibility and convenience.

In addition to these leisure routes, Southwest will launch daily service between Austin and Cincinnati, Ohio, beginning in June 2026, and will expand seasonal offerings in markets such as Pensacola, Florida. The airline expects the base to initially open with approximately 335 Pilots and 650 Flight Attendants, gradually scaling up to the full complement of 2,000 employees by mid-2027.

The decision to establish a new Crew Base in Austin followed extensive analysis by Southwest’s operational planning teams, as well as discussions with local leaders and the Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office. The move reinforces Austin’s role as a critical hub in the airline’s long-term growth strategy while improving operational efficiency within the region.

Southwest Airlines is also strengthening its community partnerships as part of the new base development. The airline will continue collaborating with Austin Workforce Solutions, the Austin Infrastructure Academy, and AUS on youth internship programs. Additionally, the AUS Career Center will serve as a central hub for connecting local talent with employment opportunities at Southwest, ensuring the airline maintains a strong pipeline of skilled employees.

This expansion underscores Southwest Airlines’ commitment to Austin and the broader Texas region. By investing in workforce development, infrastructure, and new routes, the airline is not only enhancing its operational capacity but also contributing to the local economy by generating thousands of jobs. Travelers from Austin can look forward to more flight options, improved connectivity, and an overall enhanced travel experience.

The Austin Crew Base represents a milestone in Southwest Airlines’ strategy to balance growth with community engagement and workforce development. As the airline continues to expand, it remains focused on building strong relationships with local authorities, investing in employee training, and delivering exceptional service to its passengers. With the new base and expanded routes, Southwest is positioning itself to meet growing demand while strengthening its status as Austin’s largest air carrier.

The airline’s planned growth in Austin highlights the city’s strategic importance in the U.S. aviation landscape. With the addition of new destinations, enhanced seasonal service, and a robust crew base, Southwest Airlines is poised to continue delivering convenient travel options while supporting local employment and economic development initiatives.
