ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Doc Pete Chambers visited Abilene this week as part of his campaign for Texas governor. Chambers is challenging incumbent Texas Governor Greg Abbott in the Republican primary, emphasizing border security and faith-based leadership as his top priorities.
During his visit, Chambers addressed Abbott directly while discussing border policy.

“I’ve met the man personally and talked to him this close about border security issues,” Chambers said. “I fully respect the man, I’ll never say anything bad about him. But I have to say, sir, you had plenty of time to lower taxes, you had plenty of time to truly fix the border. We cannot be reactive, and I saw that on the border.”
Chambers is one of several Republicans seeking the party’s nomination in the 2026 gubernatorial primary.

Also campaigning in Abilene this week was James “Jim” Matlock, who is running for Texas Railroad Commissioner. Matlock said protecting Texas water resources is one of his top priorities.

“I know water is one of my big priorities, protecting our aquifers from the AI data center, from the oil and gas industry. We need to recycle more, we need to make sure that our aquifers are safe for our municipal use and our farmers,” Matlock said.
The Texas primary elections are scheduled for March 2026, with the general election set for November.
