Big 12 increasing penalties for objects thrown on the field to $100,000 fine

  • October 17, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Big 12 is making a rule change after Texas Tech’s homecoming game against Kansas last week.

In a virtual video conference with some student leaders Thursday, Texas Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt said the Big 12 is increasing the penalty for throwing objects on the field during football games, now including the sidelines, team benches and all of the field beyond the playing surface.

The video conference was a closed visit with student leaders, not a public announcement, and there has not yet been an official statement from the Big 12. A video clip showing a portion of the video conference was posted to social media Thursday.

The first violation will be a warning from the public announcer, the second violation results in a 15-yard penalty and a $100,000 fine.

The Big 12 fined Tech $25,000 for fans repeatedly throwing tortillas onto the field well after kickoff.
