LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech has signed head football coach Joey McGuire to a contract extension that will keep him with the university through January 2033.
The seven-year contract began December 1 and is worth $51.9 million without incentives. McGuire recently said he wants to be at Texas Tech for the rest of his life.
Contract structure
The first contract year runs from December 1 through January 31 due to the team’s postseason participation. Subsequent contract years begin February 1.
McGuire will earn $300,000 in base salary per contract year. He will also receive rights fees for outside athletics-related income, including revenue from uniform, apparel and merchandise contracts.
The rights fees total $4 million during the first contract year, then increase to $6.2 million in February and rise by $100,000 each contract year thereafter.
Performance incentives
McGuire’s supplemental compensation varies between the 2025 season and future years. For 2025, total compensation cannot exceed $1 million.
McGuire has already earned $200,000 for winning 11 regular season games. Texas Tech’s appearance in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals earns him approximately $358,000 if the team advances no further. A national championship game appearance guarantees the full $1 million in total compensation.
Starting in 2026, incentives change. A Big 12 Conference championship win earns McGuire $350,000. A bowl game victory outside the CFP pays $150,000.
If Texas Tech makes the playoff, McGuire earns $150,000 per win, plus an additional $400,000 for winning the national championship.
McGuire can also earn bonuses for winning Big 12 Coach of the Year, National Coach of the Year, or if a team member wins the Heisman Trophy.
