Kyle Field is going to be a tough place to play defensive back when the Texas A&M Aggies meet the Miami Hurricanes in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday. 

On one end of the field, Texas A&M’s receiving duo of KC Concepcion and Mario Craver forms one of the most dynamic combinations in the country. On Miami’s side of things, freshman Malachi Toney gives quarterback Carson Beck an electrifying receiving option of his own.

For all three of those players, much of the magic happens after the catch. None of them crack 6-foot on the tape measure or 200 pounds on the scale. They create their value by making opposing defenders miss.

Yards after catch to be key for Aggies, Canes in CFP clash

No team in the College Football Playoff field is more adept at finding yards after the catch than Texas A&M. The Aggies averaged 7.4 yards after the catch during the regular season, tying them with Ole Miss for the top mark in the field.

The Hurricanes depend on their receiving options to make plays in space, too. Miami produced 58.4% of its receiving production after the catch during the regular season, which is the second-most among playoff teams behind only Georgia.

It’ll be up to the defensive coaching staffs for each team to align their players in a way that keeps these weapons bottled up. Ultimately, though, the defensive backs for the Aggies and Hurricanes will be challenged to come through with open-field tackles. The team that meets that challenge best will put itself in position to advance.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Aggies’ defense combined to miss 114 tackles in regular-season play. The Miami defense missed 134 tackles. 

Texas A&M vs Miami: Which team can disrupt QBs accustomed to comfort?

Beck has spent his collegiate career playing behind dominant offensive lines. 

In his three seasons as a starter between Miami and Georgia, Beck has been pressured on 19.2% of his dropbacks. The median pressure rate among quarterbacks this season, for reference, is around 36%.

In fact, this season offers the most extreme example of the luxury Beck has enjoyed throughout his career. He’s been the least pressured starting quarterback in college football, feeling the heat on under 15% of his dropbacks. 

When forced out of his comfort zone in the pocket, Beck’s average yards per passing attempt drops from 9.0 to 6.7. Three of his 10 turnovers have come from 39 passing attempts under pressure.

The Aggies have also protected their quarterback, Marcel Reed, effectively — especially considering the high-powered pass rushers they’ve encountered. Six of the seven players atop the SEC’s sacks leaderboard were on the Aggies’ schedule. The only outlier, Cashius Howell, is on their roster.

Reed has been pressured on 27.4% of his dropbacks in 2025. When under pressure, his yards per attempt average drops from 9.4 to 6.0. 

Both rosters feature fearsome pass rushers. Howell, who does most of his work from the edge, leads the SEC with 11.5 sacks on the year. Miami’s Akheem Mesidor is a more versatile presence along the defensive front, with seven sacks in 2025 and 30 in his five-year career. 

Can Texas A&M football cut down on turnover troubles? 

Only one team this century has won a national championship with a negative turnover differential: Clemson in 2016. Texas A&M is vying to become the second.

The Aggies have given the ball away 16 times this year and generated just nine of their own takeaways. For 11 games, that problem remained tucked under the surface of an unbeaten start. Then, Texas A&M traveled to Austin to play Texas. Reed threw a pair of backbreaking interceptions late, and the Aggies failed to force Arch Manning and the Longhorns into any turnovers in a 27-17 Texas win. 

In their last three games, the Aggies have committed seven more turnovers than they’ve forced. Texas A&M is 2-1 in that stretch, but it’s comprised of two rough performances against the Longhorns and South Carolina, as well as a steamrolling of FCS Samford. 

Miami, by contrast, is one of the best teams in the country when it comes to turnover differential. The Hurricanes are plus-9 in the turnover category this season — tied for the 12th-best mark in the country and the fourth-best mark among playoff teams. Miami has forced a takeaway in 11 of its 12 games, and has generated multiple takeaways in seven contests.

The Aggies have been digging themselves out of a turnover hole all season, but the Lone Star Showdown loss to Texas illustrated how tough that is to do when up against an opponent of a similar quality. The Hurricanes certainly qualify as such.
