Texas high school football playoff games are going on at AT&T Stadium right now, but today we look back at the Wichita Falls Coyotes when they played in their final championship game.

In doing research on this important day in Wichita Falls history, Texas Monthly says this was the end of a dynasty for one of the greatest programs in Texas high school football history. They said from 1937-1971, the Wichita Falls Coyotes played football better than any other school in Texas.

Just like the Dallas Cowboys, high school playoff championship games were played at The Cotton Bowl. After the new Dallas Cowboys stadium opened, they would move over there. The best footage I could find from the game itself is from this old news report from WFAA. Fast forward to the 22 minute mark in the video to see footage from the game.

Ronnie was a star running back for the Coyotes and helped the team win the state championship just two years prior in 1969 against the same team he would be facing in 1971. Ronnie in the 1971 State Championship Game would have 181 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Coyotes would have to deal with a player that has now been named ‘Two Minute Tommy’.

Before he became the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, he was the quarterback for the San Antonio Lee Volunteers. His Volunteers were up 21-6 after after they returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. The Coyotes fought back with three touchdowns in the second half making it 27-21 Coyotes. Tommy Kramer was known for his quick offense which earned him the nickname “Two Minute Tommy”. The Volunteers would score with just over two minutes to go to take the one point lead. Sadly Wichita Falls would throw an interception to seal the victory for San Antonio Lee at 28-27.

The Coyotes maybe gone, but it’s fun to look back on these important moments in their history.
