One two weather punch with winds today and potential record heat this weekend

  • December 18, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The same cold front that has brought us strong winds and cooler air today also sets the stage for unusual December warmth just days later.

Weather HeadlinesWeather Headlines(KCBD)

As of midday Thursday, the cold front has moved through our region, but its effects are still being felt. Strong northerly winds continue through the afternoon. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph will be common, with occasional gusts approaching 40 mph mixed in. This will make it feel cooler than what we saw yesterday.

What’s driving that wind is the cold front itself. As it moves through, air pressure jumps quickly behind it, and the atmosphere naturally tries to balance things out. The fastest way to do that is by moving air, and that movement is what we feel as strong, steady wind pushing out of the north northeast today.

Skies stay mostly clear, allowing sunshine to efficiently warm the surface despite the low December sun angle. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 50s and 60s, which is cooler but still above average for this time of year.

By Friday, a quick turnaround is expected as far as the weather is concerned. Winds turn back to the southeast, and temperatures respond almost immediately.

Southwest winds are especially good at warming. They pull in dry air and help it warm even more as it sinks down and compresses as it comes down from the higher terrain to our west. By Friday afternoon, it feels noticeably warmer than today, more like early spring than December.

Saturday is when the record heat is most likely.

Warmth is expected to peak as southwest winds continue, skies stay mostly sunny as temperatures climb into the upper 70s and 80s.

This places December records within reach. Today, the forecasted high in Lubbock is 80 degrees just one degree shy of breaking the all-time December high in Lubbock.

This warmth comes with dry air and a breeze, which can raise fire weather concerns. It’s not extreme but a good day to be cautious with anything that could spark a fire.

A weak cold front arrives near sunset Saturday, shifting winds to the northwest. Temperatures should peak ahead of that front before easing back Saturday night.

Sunday cools down a bit behind the front, but it doesn’t feel like winter for long. Temperatures remain well above average and early next week warms up again.

As Christmas approaches, highs may run 20 to 30 degrees above normal keeping conditions dry and unseasonably mild.
