As the dollar gets tighter, we’re all looking for inexpensive things to do and places to visit. One local option was recently named the best free attraction in Texas.
Fort Worth’s Kimbell Art Museum took the top spot in the state in an analysis from CashNetUSA, an online lender. The company looked at publicly available five-star Tripadvisor ratings for more than 6,000 free attractions across the country. The Kimbell was No. 1 in Texas, with an average rating of 4.77.
The museum was designed by architect Louis I. Kahn and opened in 1972. Dallas Morning News architecture critic Mark Lamster has called it “arguably the greatest modern building in the United States, and certainly in Texas.”

It’s free to visit the Kimbell’s permanent collection, which includes works from the 3rd millennium B.C. to the mid-20th century. There are also special exhibitions in the Renzo Piano Pavilion, an addition to the museum that debuted in 2013. Tickets start at $14.
The current special exhibition is of a trove of Roman sculptures that “offers a dazzling glimpse of the Roman world and a compelling history of collecting itself,” art historian Sarah Kozlowski wrote in a review for The News.
