EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Mesa Hills Leo’s Club, a junior organization of Lions Club International, recently organized a cleanup at Smelter Town cemetery in El Paso.

Sophia Flores, the club president, explained that the club’s mission is to “help out our community” and set an example for others.

Eric Cruz, a club member, shared that the initiative to clean the cemetery came after members were approached to volunteer, and they sought approval from their leadership.

The club’s goals include assisting community members and encouraging youth participation in community service.

“Our community is our home, and it’s very important that we take care of our home,” a member said, emphasizing the significance of their efforts.

In addition to cemetery cleanups, the club engages in various projects such as making bags for cancer patients, building beds for children without them, and placing roses on veterans’ graves.

This weekend, they plan to build beds in Canutillo.

Reflecting on their activities, members expressed a sense of fulfillment.

“It feels great to help out someone that needs help,” one member said, noting the personal connection to military service when placing roses on graves.

The Mesa Hills Leo’s Club in El Paso was formed two years ago.

Members have participated in leadership conferences, including one in Orlando, where they discussed food insecurity and border community issues.

The club aims to continue its community service and inspire other youth to join its efforts.
