December pauses then hits fast forward

  • December 21, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock officially reached 81 degrees on Saturday.

That officially breaks 104-year-old record of 80 degrees that had been standing since 1921. And if you’ve been outside this afternoon, that record probably doesn’t surprise you.

It’s been warm, windy, and very dry across the region. That combination is why fire weather has been the biggest concern today.

A red flag warning has been issued and will expire at 7 p.m.

But there’s a turning point, and it’s a cold front which is basically a dividing line between two different air masses. Ahead of it today, we’ve been sitting in warm, dry air.

As it pushes through the area, winds ease up along with fire danger.

Overnight, cooler air moves in behind the front and pushes out the warm air. Lows fall into the 30s and conditions will feel much colder compared to last night.

Sunday will stay on the quieter side with lighter winds, and while it’s still warmer than what late December usually delivers, it will be noticeably cooler with highs in the mid to low 60s.

The break won’t last long, and by Monday the pattern flips again.

A ridge will build into the southern U.S., and once that happens, warm air has a clear path back in. Southwest winds return, and temperatures will respond quickly.

That’s the story for the next week. Not wild swings. No big changes. Just a very steady stretch of warm afternoons that don’t feel like they belong in the week leading up to Christmas.

In Lubbock, daily high temperature records are in play from Monday through Friday.
