Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead as it is known in English, is a holiday that celebrates and honors those that have passed. The holiday stems from the belief that the souls of our loved ones live on even after death. On the holiday, celebrated on November 1 – 2, families come together and make altars decorated with yellow marigolds, cempazúchitl, and calaveras, or small skulls. The altars are also filled with photographs, mementos, and ofrendas, or offerings, like food that their loved ones would have enjoyed during their lifetime. The festivities are also taken to the graveyard where people will visit their loved one’s graves and commemorate them. The “Catrina” and “Catrín” have become popular icons of the holiday, and many will dress up like them and wear skeletal makeup to celebrate life and death.
Whether you celebrate the holiday or are experiencing it for the first time, come and celebrate this colorful tradition. Admission to the Dallas Día de los Muertos Parade and Festival is FREE! For more information, click here.
